NSW Maritime has safely removed all 8,000 litres of diesel from a grounded fishing vessel at Bawley Point, significantly reducing environmental risks to the South Coast’s sensitive marine environment.
The rapid response has focused on protecting the local marine environment, nearby beaches and culturally and environmentally sensitive coastal areas from pollution risks.
NSW Maritime established an Incident Management Team, deployed specialist personnel and equipment, engaged salvage contractors and established a forward operating base to coordinate response efforts.
On Wednesday 29 October, challenging sea conditions caused the vessel to break in half, reinforcing the need for a swift and coordinated response to minimise environmental impacts and safely manage the site.
The operation has brought together NSW Maritime’s Marine Pollution Emergency Response team, Boating Safety Officers, environmental specialists and drone operators, supported by local, state and federal agencies.
NSW Maritime is continuing to work with partner agencies, the vessel owner and insurers to safely remove and dispose of the vessel, with protecting the environment, local communities and sensitive coastal areas remaining the highest priority.
A work site has been set up in the area to deal with the clean-up. Maritime officials ask the local community to be mindful when coming down to the area as there is heavy machinery in use.
