What’s changing: Saturday 10 to Friday 16 October

  • Reading to Newbury and Bedwyn: trains will run as normal
  • Pewsey: buses will replace trains between Pewsey and Swindon, where you can connect with other train services
  • London Paddington to Plymouth and Penzance: Trains continue to operate but via a diversionary route adding extra time, check your journey before travelling
  • Chippenham to Westbury, including Melksham: Buses will replace trains on weekdays as only limited train services can operate

Why the work is needed

Network Rail is replacing track near Pewsey on the main line between Reading and Taunton, which links London with Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. New track reduces the risk of faults or the need for speed restrictions, making journeys more reliable.

GWR’s Station Manager for Kennet & Thames Valley, Tom Butler, said:

“We know how many people rely on these trains, and we’re sorry that some journeys will take longer while this work takes place.

“This investment will mean more reliable journeys for years to come. In the meantime, please check your journey before you set out and allow a little extra time. Our teams will be on hand to help.”

Martin Davey, senior portfolio manager for Network Rail’s Great Western Route, said:

“We’re carrying out essential work in the Pewsey area to help keep this important route safe and reliable for passengers.

“Our teams will be carrying out essential track improvements and upgrading the drainage to increase the resilience of the area against high rainfall events.

“We’re sorry for the disruption while this work takes place and would like to thank passengers and local residents for their patience. Please check your journey before travelling and allow extra time to reach your destination.”
