Travellers who come to Leiden’s Relief on 2 and 3 October can become real herring masters by playing the classic can-throwing game with (fake)herring at Leiden Central. The ‘herring throwing’ can be found in front of the station at the carnival. This way, passengers are immediately welcomed off the train.
During Leiden’s Relief, it is celebrated that Leiden was liberated from the Spaniards on 3 October 1574. The Watergeuzen who liberated the city distributed herring and white bread to the starving population of Leiden. That is why eating herring is still a tradition during Leiden’s Relief.
Leiden Centraal will also be decorated in Leiden’s Relief style for the party.The red and white colours of the city can be seen in abundance in the station hall.
Extra (long) trains
NS is making several trains longer so that visitors to Leiden Relief can also come home. In addition, additional trains run to Rotterdam and Haarlem during the night of 2 October to 3 October and 3 October to 4 October.
