FINLAND: Helsinki City Council has voted in favour of the Crown Bridges light rail line connecting Laajasalo with Hakaniemi being extended by a further 5 km through the city to Jätkäsaari. The cost is estimated at €48m.
The three vehicle-free Crown Bridges are still under construction at a cost of €326m with a view to tram services starting in 2027, although they opened to pedestrians and cyclists in April. The bridges cut the distance from the city centre to the eastern coastal suburbs from 11 km to 5.5 km
The line will be served by new 45 m long trams, and the extension will require lengthening of current tram stops.
- The metro station at Helsinki’s main railway station will be closed for six months from October 2027 as part of a €125m refurbishment. This will include replacing escalators dating from 1982 when the metro first opened.
